Just wanted to post this picture I found on my Tumblr-string; not strictly Oscar-related, but related enough in a lovely photo of John Gray:

I was wondering if anyone could educate me on John Gray's influence in Wilde's life? Of course there is the Dorian connection, but I know considerably less about him than Bosie Douglas, so if anyone would like to inform me on how they met, etc. I would be eternally grateful. :)

The Wikipedia page on him is fairly good and there's been one or two biographies written of him.

He came from a working class family and had to quit school at a rather young age in order to work. He was mostly self-educated. He managed to get a civil service position and moved to London and that is when he began writing poetry and moving in literary circles and eventually came to Wilde's attention.

I believe he and Wilde had some difficulties after Wilde became infatuated by Bosie and Gray was a very depressive person. I remember reading in Ellman that there were a few occasions where he threatened suicide. He had a very close relationship (probably both romantic and platonic) with Raffalovich. Later in his life he converted to Catholicism and became a priest.

Raffalovich, really? That's fascinating. I knew he was middle class but I didn't know he was self-educated; that's admirable. Do you know the names of those biographies, by any chance?
